Last summer a Stow sewing group began work on a panel of The Great Tapestry of Scotland, one of the biggest community arts projects ever to be realised in Scotland.
The Great Tapestry was devised by author Alexander McCall Smith and features the work of historian Alistair Moffat and artist Andrew Crummy. It illustrates the story of Scotland from prehistory to modern times, stitched in wools and cottons on linen.
The Stow panel is number 12 in a series of 163 and depicts 670 AD:The Book of Kells, Lindisfarne Gospels and St Cuthbert at Melrose. It is estimated that each panel takes at least 400 hours to stitch and the finished tapestry will be the longest in the world. On completion in August 2013 The Great Tapestry will hang in the Scottish Parliament building and thereafter will tour Scotland.
The Stow panel will be on display at Stow Primary School Spring Fair on Sat May 18th 10am-2pm. More information on the tapestry can be found at www.scotlandstapestry.com or on facebook.
I have just found your site as I am researching the Lives of the De.Spiganovicz Family and in particular that of Victor J DeSpiganovicz who lived in may places around the Borders including The Old Crookston House.
I see that Alistair Moffat was associated with the Tapestry and as I have in my possession a quantity of 14 Paid Cheques dating between the dates of 5th June 1966 and 28th Jan 1967 which were paid to a Jas M Moffat !! By a Victor J Despiganovicz !! I just wondered if the Payee might be related in some way to Alistair, and also wondered, for what the payments may have been! I have a large quantity of Letters and Scripts/Stories/ Newspaper cuttings that Victor kept over a period from 1900 through to 1967 when he was 86 years old and living alone in Drem.
I know that his Sister Mary(May) and Brother Paul were members of the St Mary’s Kirk of Stow and indeed have a copy of the Letter dated 30th Jan 1930 when Paul as the Treasurer at the time appealed for donations for the Electrification of the Church and Manse (Trying to Raise £210-00). His address was given as Lugate House Stow.
Would you please pass this on to the appropriate person and hopefully I may be able to both Gather and Share some of my Artifacts with them.
Best Regards
Roy Blake Spalding Lincolnshire.
